Seen the new movie Why Did I Get Married?

The movie is about 4 married couples with all kinds of marriage issues - including: infidelity, making unkind remarks, bickering, drinking, unemployment, workaholism, and dealing with past wounds.The message of the movie is to be honest and communicate with each other.

Got me to thinking, why did I get married? Thinking back over 30 years ago, to be honest my reasons ranged from “that’s what you did…get married and start a family” to “I really like her and want to spend my life with her.”

Where I stand now, my view of marriage I suppose has matured. Why would anyone get married? It’s really the fundamental need of all human beings: the need to love and be loved. And while everyone does not have to be married, there is no more intimate and fulfilling way to achieve our basic human needs than through marriage.

So now, the question for me is not “why did I get married?” but “why do I stay married?” Because I need someone to care for, and I need someone to care for me.

Now, if you are preparing for marriage, you can spend some time thinking about this. Why are you getting married? There are some reasons you shouldn’t get married, like just trying to escape something else (such as your annoying parents). Or, because someone is pressuring you to do so.

But why do you want to get married? And why this person? Talk to each other about your answers.

The clearer you are now on your reasons for getting married, the less likely a few years down the road you will ask yourself in the negative tone of the movie title, Why did I get married!
