Nicole Kidman on Good Morning America - Marriage Thoughts

<

Nicole Kidman was interviewed by Diane Sawyer on today. It’s when she was asked about a quote from her husband Keith Urban that the tears swelled up in her eyes.

The quote had to do with Urban’s entering rehab for alcoholism 4 months after he and Kidman were married. Urban said that in most marriages such challenges come later, not so soon in a marriage, but when it happens, it’s like having a house burn down and having to build another one. And he added, she (Nicole) makes me want to be a better man.

It’s true. Challenges come to every marriage at some point. Some soon, some later. Sometimes the challenges are things we bring on ourselves through bad decisions and actions. Other times, it’s those accidental things, the things we have no control over. Maybe a job loss or health problem.

But I like Urban’s description of what has happened. It’s like having your house burn down and having to build another. It can be devastating. But you pick up the pieces, move on and start rebuilding.

I tell couples all the time that marriage preparation won’t solve all your problems. You don’t know what they are til life comes at you. But one thing you can talk in making preparation for marriage, is how you will handle problems when they come.

In her Good Morning America interview, suggested in her comments that you have to remain humble in your love. Not sure what all she meant. But maybe the idea that you enter marriage realizing that your love will be tested - tested by your own failures as a human being and by life itself.
